
The weather in Japan is quite varied from north to south. It is almost tropical in the southern islands and it is cold and snowy in the northern islands. Tokyo (about in the middle) has a moderate climate and is on about the same latitude as San Franci sco, CA or Raleigh, NC. It gets below freezing in the winter, but only snows once or twice a year. The spring (May-June) experiences a rainy season for 6-7 weeks, and then the summer gets very hot. The northern islands are known for their ski areas and winter festivals, and provide a wonderful vacations in the winter. The middle and southern parts are visited more for their sights and history.
